                       ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

             Madonna Manneh

1. What was life like before you became a member?

Before I became a member, and really since I had my daughters, I’ve been trying to lose weight and feel confident again. I’m a stay at home mom, life is busy, so I was trying so hard to carve some time for myself and become healthier, look and feel better.

2. At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?

I was exercising 5x a week for at least an hour a day. I’ve tried spinning, toning classes, cardio classes. Weight lifting was foreign to me and I always felt intimidated by it. Then my old gym started offering classes with weight lifting and cardio, I was looking for something new, so I tried it and fell in love with weight lifting.
I also ran 2 half marathons. I was always active and always tried different classes and workouts, but never found something that truly worked for me that was fun and efficient at the same time

3. What originally prompted you to seek us out?

I’ve heard of CrossFit, but never thought it’s for me. I also was working out so much but not getting results, and I didn’t feel challenged enough. I kind of knew I needed a change. Originally, I signed my daughter up for the kids classes at Keystone CrossFit. I loved the way the gym is set up! When we came to class, I’d check the WODs and I was intrigued. I was always curious about CrossFit, but never thought I’m cut out for it. I asked Tim for an introductory session, and the 7-minute workout made me feel like I’ve never worked out before. Needless to say, I WAS HOOKED!!!

4.  What was your goal when you originally signed up?

I wanted to learn new things, I wanted to see how hard I can push my body and how far it would go. Of course I wanted to be fitter, stronger and I wanted the numbers on the scale to change, but most of all I wanted to set an example for my daughters. That girls can be and SHOULD be strong.

5. What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with any similar struggles you did?

Be a little selfish and don’t be intimated! If you put in the time and effort, CrossFit is the best thing that’ll happen to you. You’ll get outstanding results and find an amazing community.

 6. What have you liked best about working with us?

EVERYTHING!!! The way Tim and Allison coach are extremely personalized, they truly care. They know my strengths and weaknesses, so they know how to push and what tips to give. I’ve been lifting weights for years before starting with KCF, but the techniques I learned and the things I was able to do in the 11 months I’ve been here are priceless!!
And then there’s the COMMUNITY!!! What an amazing group of people! Welcoming, encouraging, and want you to succeed! They cheer me on when I’m struggling during a lift or a workout and they celebrate my small accomplishments and wins.

7. What are you most proud of achieving since you started?

There’s not one thing that I’m proud of. I know it’s silly, but when I first started I couldn’t jump rope and I was able to get 60 in a row during a workout one day. To me that’s huge. I’m also able to lift way more weight than I ever imagined. I’m running faster, getting stronger and getting fitter overall.

8. With everything that you have accomplished, has your view of yourself changed?

I’m still working on that. As a woman, it’s really hard to let go of the scale and the old concept of “skinny”. I’ve cleaned up my diet and I am trying to concentrate on being healthy and fit, and the scale will follow. I can say It’s finally clicking with me!!

9. Do you have any special moments/memories?

I have too many to list, but one of my best moments was around the time I started. I was having a hard time with a WOD, everyone was done, and I was ready to give up. Then everyone started cheering me on and two people started doing the WOD with me and they finished it with me! It just showed me how everyone cared and truly wanted me to succeed. Also, participating in my first CrossFit Open was one of the scariest and yet amazing experiences. Challenging myself and competing among friends was so much fun!

10. What is your favorite movement/lift?

My favorite lift is the Hang Clean. As for a favorite movement, I don’t have one yet, but I can’t wait to get my first pullup!

I am so glad I joined Keystone CrossFit, KCF is my happy place!
