ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
1. What was life like before you became a member?
Kid-centered. Just running my girls to their activities/practices and not really taking any time out for myself.
2. At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?
Prior to enrolling I had been running, doing kettlebell and bodyweight exercises in my basement. I ran the occasional 5k/10k. Six years ago we moved to Moscow, and our new house does not have a finished basement, so my fitness stalled.
3. What originally prompted you to seek us out?
I was originally introduced by a past member that had done The World’s Best Boot Camp. So, my sister Alison called and talked to Allison and the rest is history! We did the Boot Camp, and I think during week 2 or 3 we were watching the regular class before the Boot Camp and we saw Donny Kennedy doing these insane box jumps- and we vowed we were not going to do that, ever. We were wrong!
4. What was your goal when you originally signed up?
To look good naked- still working on that but I originally wanted to get skinny! Which is crazy! Because now I don’t want to be skinny. I want to be strong….but still look good naked.
5. What have you liked best about working with us?
It sounds so cliché’ but it is definitely the community. We have a really great group of people to come sweat with. I mean where else could I work out and have the best CrossFit caddy there is? Madonna Manneh is the best, she gets the weights and then she tricks me into thinking it’s less than what it really is! I also like popping in to the 5:30 to get a dose of Hot Sticks Kelly Jones with her comedic relief and motherly wisdom.
6. What are you most proud of achieving since you started?
There are a couple things- I am proud that I learned/got the strength to do strict HSPU’s and I’m really proud I am doing box jumps again! Last year was rough on the shins to say the least- so I am thankful my sister and brother in law got me a soft box for my recent birthday! That gave me the confidence to try them again- granted I will still probably not ever do them on a wooden box again…. Oh, and getting double unders! That’s pretty cool too!
7. With everything that you have accomplished, has your view of yourself changed?
I would say so- I definitely have more confidence these days in all facets of my life.
8. What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with any similar struggles you did?
Just walk in the door- give it a shot. You only have strength and confidence and friendships to gain here.
9. Do you have any special moments/memories?
Last April my sister Alison conned Jenn Carra out of CrossFit retirement to do a 3 person competition. We had big plans- Alison was going to do the pull up portion of the WOD, Jenn was going to do TTB and I was going to do HSPU. The day of the competition we decided to alter our attack of the WOD. So, Alison still did the pullups and I ended up doing the TTB, then it was Jenn’s turn to do the HSPU. She had never done one- but that day cheering her on and watching her getting coached during this competition from the other competitors was awesome! That is what CrossFit is all about. Cheering each other on and lifting each other up. I loved it! She didn’t get her HSPU but we all had fun trying to get her there.
10. What is your favorite movement/lift?
It would definitely be HSPU- I never set it as a goal to learn them- I just wanted to learn how to do them for the competition I mentioned earlier, after doing the modifications in the WODs and doing negatives after class… who knew?! A little bit of extra work paid off.
The past couple days my big kid has been coming with me to class- and I am so proud of her for giving CrossFit another shot. I want both my girls to see strong is beautiful. I also want to say thank you for picking me for Athlete of the Month this month I am truly humbled! It really made me smile when
