                         ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

                  Joann Fazen

 

  1. What was life like before you became a member?

My life was career and family driven. My kids were 5 and 2 ½ at the time I became a member, so they were my priority outside of the office.

  1. At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?

I was not consistently exercising when I joined, which was so frustrating to me. I have always been an athletic/active person. Softball, soccer, basketball, swimming, running, I did it all.

 

  1. What originally prompted you to seek us out?

I was at a point in my life when the negative was taking over and it was affecting my family the most. I was just tired all the time and had very little patience due to being overweight and inactive. I didn’t have the energy to keep up with kids and I really hated that feeling.  

I kept seeing post on Facebook about the World’s Best Bootcamp at Keystone and the impact it was having on all of these individuals. For months, I would look at the page but never brought myself to actually make the call. After a long, hot summer of being so uncomfortable hiding in my clothes and refusing to swim with my kids because I was so ashamed, I finally had enough. I made the call and joined for the boot camp in October of 2016.

  1.  What was your goal when you originally signed up?   

My original goal was to get active again, get motivated, lose some weight and take what I learned to keep going on my own. Honestly, I had no intention of staying longer than the 6-week camp. I was NOT interested in CrossFit at all! I would think to myself watching the classes before camp, those people are crazy and I could NEVER lift those weight or do that movement.                                       

5. What have you liked best about working with us? 

Don’t get me wrong, Tim, Ali, Jess and Julie are AMAZING but it’s really the sense of community the keeps me motivated. I’m a bit of a class floater, I get there when I can - 5pm one day and then 5:30 am the next depending on my schedule. I truly never feel out of place regardless of which class I happen to attend that day, there is always a smiling, friendly person there to encourage me to hit that PR or pushing me to finish one of Julie’s more painful WODs.

6. What are you most proud of achieving since you started?

I’d love to say it was hitting 325# deadlift or starting to string together double unders, but it’s everything I have accomplished outside of the gym that I am so proud of. I coach my daughter’s soccer and softball teams, something I wouldn’t have done three years ago. My career has really started to develop, I received 2 promotions to a job I LOVE within the past three years, which is a direct result of the confidence I gained from CrossFit.

 

7. With everything that you have accomplished, has your view of yourself changed?

Absolutely!  CrossFit truly has made me stronger, both physically and mentally. I am a much more confident person than I was the day I walked into Keystone. I still have goals I’m working towards but I’m enjoying the processes and celebrating the little wins along the way.

8. What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with any similar struggles you did?  

Stop making excuses and just do it! It’s going to be hard and it’s going to suck, but I promise it will be the best thing you every did for yourself! And you’ll meet some pretty awesome people along the way ????

9. Do you have any special moments/memories?

The special moments for me is when my kids come to class, although it doesn’t happen that often anymore. They get to see what their mom does and it usually inspires them to work on skills. Mackenzie is obsessed with handstands since she saw Tim do them one day. Matthew’s goal now is to “Get big muscles and pick up heavy things.” He has been asking us to get him weights and a barbell so he can pick them up over his head.

10. What is your favorite movement/lift?

I absolutely love hang power cleans, especially when we get to cycle them in a workout!

 

I am so excited and honored to be February’s athlete of the month! I literally couldn’t even respond to Jess when she told me because I was speechless!

A lot of my goals have changed since starting CrossFit, but there is 1 that has never wavered – to be a role model to my kids and someone they can be proud of. It has been so important to me to show them (especially my daughter) that strong is beautiful, there is no such thing as perfect, and to go after your goals with everything you have. As the saying goes, children will follow your example not listen to your advice. Keystone has given me the confidence and abilities to be their example, something I will always be grateful for!

A little shout out:

I would never have been able to accomplish anything, both with my career and my fitness, without my husband’s support. Matt manages before and after school with the kids because of my work schedule. When I tell him, I need to stay late at the office or I’m going to the gym after work/on Saturday mornings, he is always supportive and encouraging. I am so appreciative of everything he does for us!

Mackenzie and Matthew always keep me grounded no matter what. Mackenzie constantly reminds me “You picked 325# up to your waist for like a second, that’s not impressive Noodle Arms! Let me know when you get that over your head.” Challenge accepted, kid!
