ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

                  Tara Young

 

1. What was life like before you became a member?

I was born and raised in New York. I moved to Scranton 5 years ago from California. Life consisted of being a wife to my husband, Mike and mother to my girls, Allison (5) and Carly (2).

 

2. At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?

When I lived in California, I was working out consistently and was in great shape. I even did some CrossFit workouts with some co-workers. Shortly after moving to Scranton, I learned I was pregnant. I put exercising to the side and gained 50lbs. After the pregnancy, I worked out on and off, but not consistently and had no results.

 

3. What originally prompted you to seek us out?

After my second daughter, Carly, was born, she was diagnosed with a health issue that hit me hard. My weight spiraled out of control and I found myself heavier than I was when I was pregnant. A year after many doctor appointments, therapy and a major surgery, I was finally starting to get fed up with my weight. One morning, Allie asked me to take them to the trampoline park and I made an excuse to not go because I knew I couldn’t keep up with them on my own. At that moment, I knew I did not want to be a mom that could not be hands on with my kids and then I contacted Tim at KCF.

 

4. What was your goal when you originally signed up? 

My goal was to lose the baby weight and to just feel confident when I walked in a room again. I wanted to WANT to be in a good picture or to pull off any style of clothing.  

                                                                                                                                              

5. What have you liked best about working with us? 

Tim, Alli, Julie and Jess are always pushing me to my limits that I never knew I could reach. And of course, I love my fellow members who I look forward to seeing every day that I go. It really is like a second family. It’s a great feeling when even my daughter gets SO excited to go see “teacher Tim” and her other little future CrossFitter friends.

 

6.  What are you most proud of achieving since you started?

     I have achieved so much since I started KCF; physically and mentally. I am down 62lbs and 4 pant sizes. I am also so proud to say that I finally found something that I love doing for myself and that I am passionate about. I’ve never truly had a real hobby in my life and since I found one, I realize how much more enjoyable life can be.

 

7.  With everything that you have accomplished, has your view of yourself changed?

My life has done a complete 180 this year. My girls have a new and improved version of their mother and a role model that they have deserved from me for a long time. Also, KCF has not only taught me the importance of exercising, but also the importance of diet as well. Clean eating is a huge part of my life now that I actually enjoy it!

 

8.  What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with any similar struggles you did?  

It doesn’t matter your age, weight, or if you never worked out a day in your life; ANYONE can do this. All it takes is to try one class and you will be hooked. KCF will change your life if you give it a chance.

 

 

9. Do you have any special moments/memories?

When I RX’d my first WOD. It happened to be my first Open and Tim was my judge (which made me nervous to begin with) He said, “you can totally RX this”. You obviously don’t say no to your head coach, so I did it! It was a challenge; however, I was so excited to see “RX” next to my name on the whiteboard for the first time.

 

10.  What is your favorite movement/lift?

Med Ball Cleans and Sumo Deadlifts are my favorite!

 

I just want to truly thank everyone here at KCF; coaches and the community, for all of the encouragement over the past year. Most people dread starting a weight loss journey, but you all have made mine so much fun and exciting!
