ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Dave Castro

 

 

  1. What was life like before you became a member?

 

Before joining Keystone CrossFit, I had a real poor quality of life. I had gained a ton of weight. I could barely breathe doing simple tasks. I had such bad foot pain that when I came home from work, I could barely walk. Everything was hard for me and it was making me miserable. My mental health was suffering as well.

 

  1. At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?

 

When I enrolled, I was doing zero physical activity. I joined planet fitness a few times only to never go and cancel the membership shortly after. I’ve never had any background in fitness. I played sports when I was younger but has an adult my life was pretty sedentary.

 

  1. What originally prompted you to seek us out?

 

Honestly, I was desperate. My health got so out of control I didn’t know what to do. I knew someone who went to Keystone CrossFit and it looked like a ton of fun. I was so full of self-doubt though I didn’t think I could do it. Even the day I met with Tim I had one foot in the door and one foot out. I remember telling him I’d like to start when I get paid. Which was like a week later. Tim said, “no you can start now.” I believe that saved my life. If I would have left that day and had a whole week to think about it i don’t know if I would have joined.

 

  1. What was your goal when you originally signed up? 

 

When I signed up, I just wanted to lose weight and feel better. My goals were very vague. I didn’t know I was capable of what I’ve accomplished so far with Keystone CrossFit.

                                                                                                                                                                   

5. What have you liked best about working with us? 

I could go on forever about this. Tim is an encyclopedia of knowledge. I try to pick his brain any chance I can. His passion and commitment have made me want to be better. The community has been so vital and important in my journey. Being around like-minded individuals who have the same goals and push themselves on a regular basis is inspiring. It pushes me and it’s become my family. I look forward to waking up every day to go see my friends at the gym. Also, the nutrition coaching has taken my fitness to the next level.

6. What are you most proud of achieving since you started?

Losing 100lbs hands down. It was never a goal because I didn’t know that it was even possible.

 

7. With everything that you have accomplished, has your view of yourself changed?

Absolutely! I am mentally and physically stronger than I have ever been at any point in my life. My mindset is completely different. I don’t see things and think I can’t do them anymore. Actually, the opposite. I think I can do just about anything with hard work and dedication.

 

8. What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with any similar struggles you did?  

I would say if you joined Keystone CrossFit and you put in the work it will change your life. I didn’t think I could even do CrossFit. But CrossFit is for everyone. It’s for the grandma who wants to hold her grandchildren again or the dad who just wants to be able to play with their kids. It’s worth it, you’re worth it, and it’s the best decision I could have made for myself.

 

9. Do you have any special moments/memories?

I have so many special moments already. Losing 100lbs, competing in the holiday throw down, and every potluck we’ve ever had. The first time I did a handstand walk was pretty cool too.

 

10. What is your favorite movement/lift?

Clean and jerks and handstand walking. All I want to do is put more weight on that bar and fight to get it up. I love the fight!

 

This is a huge honor for me and has been on my goal list for a while. I’m so grateful and passionate about Keystone CrossFit! I truly believe it can change your life. I am not the same person I was when I joined. I am the best version of myself I’ve ever been. The community itself is powerful! I love working out with everyone. I know on Tuesdays Jess is going to lift with the 9am crew. I know Danny, Nish, and Will are going to push me to lift heavier. I know Ariel is going to help me finish that WOD and tell me “not to be a b***h.” We are a family here and I love this place. I can’t wait to continue this journey with everyone!
